We have some videos on our YouTube channel showing the soundproofing result and some before and after videos, but filming the soundproofing result is actually very difficult.
How do you capture a before and after soundproofing result?
The soundproofing between houses using our four step soundproofing method results in an amazing sound reduction and most airborne noise is difficult to hear or capture on video. Various impact noises can still be heard but so muffled that they are again difficult to capture on film.

MEASURING SOUND LOUDNESS
Decibels: A decibel (dB) measures how loud a noise is.
50dB is quiet while 140dB is so loud it can immediately injure your ears.
Case Study
The level of sound prevented from transmitting through separating walls and floors is measured (airborne sound insulation), and the higher the figure the better (the regulations require a score of at least 45dB DnT,w + Ctr). The testing covers a wide range of frequencies, but unfortunately takes the average of the room.
An amazing wall system on the party wall might achieve 70dB DnT,w + Ctr but if you have not treated the suspended floor void, the ceiling void or other holes in the structure, these would let neighbour noise through.
If the sound test found the overall sound insulation average of the room to be 50dB DnT,w + Ctr, which is a pass, you might still be able to make out words and follow conversations from next door.
The acoustic test came into force on 1 July 2003 for refurbishment projects.
To give you an idea what 45dB DnT,w + Ctr means in real life, in a 1950s three-bedroom semi-detached house, Quietco paid an independent company to carry out a UKAS-accredited sound insulation test of the separating party wall before any soundproofing was installed.
The sound insulation value of this wall measured at 47dB DnT,w + Ctr, 2dB higher than the building regulations require for new dwellings, so better sound insulation than the standard required for properties newly built today.
However, we stood in our client’s neighbours’ dining room, the other side of the party wall, and managed to turn on our client’s smart speaker.
After soundproofing using the four-step method, we achieved 62dB DnT,w + Ctr; this is a 15dB reduction in noise from next door.
This is a 139.61% reduction in pressure level of sound from next door.
The calculation is as follows:
(A) 62dB = 0.0251785 Pa (pascals – measure of sound pressure)
(B) 47dB = 0.00447744 Pa
Change % = 100 × (A – B)/((A + B)/2)
= 100 × (0.0251785 – 0.00447744)/
((0.0251785 + 0.00447744)/2) = 100 × 0.0207/(0.02966/2)
= 100 × 1.39608
= 139.61%
That gives a 139.61% change in pressure level of sound.
10db is a halving of sound as we hear it, so the 15dB reduction represents a significant reduction.
So, will soundproofing work?
Yes, absolutely, it will. Soundproofing works when you follow the four step soundproofing method. This method ensures you get a significant reduction in noise, like our clients.
