Is Soundproofing Plasterboard Any Good?

It is sold as a soundproof board, it can be plastered and painted like normal, and it promises to cut out your noisy neighbours, so it is no wonder people reach for soundproofing plasterboard hoping it will fix the problem on its own. The honest answer is a little more nuanced than the packaging suggests.

It is a genuinely useful product, but only when it is understood for what it is and used the right way. Get that wrong and, as we will explain, you can actually end up making the noise in your own home worse. Here is the honest picture from Quietco.

What Soundproofing Plasterboard Actually Does

Soundproofing plasterboard being plastered as the final layer of a wall

At its heart, soundproofing plasterboard is a dense board that adds mass to a wall. Mass genuinely matters, because a heavier, denser surface is harder for sound to push into motion, so it blocks more airborne noise than a light, flexible one.

That is why it is normally the final layer in a proper soundproof wall system, it does the job of adding mass while still giving you a surface you can plaster and paint. So it absolutely has a real and valuable role to play. The problem only comes when it is expected to do the whole job by itself.

Why It's No Good on Its Own

Comparison showing soundproofing plasterboard alone barely reduces noise while board plus a resilient layer works

Used on its own, soundproofing plasterboard gives you only a slight reduction in noise. Mass alone simply is not enough, because a single rigid layer still lets a great deal of sound pass straight through it.

To actually work, it has to be paired with a resilient layer, something like a rubber, that sound finds very difficult to travel through. That combination of mass plus separation is the key. It is well established in acoustics that a separated double-leaf structure far outperforms a single dense layer, which is exactly why a board slapped straight onto an existing wall disappoints.

How It Can Actually Make Noise Worse

Here is the part almost nobody realises. Soundproofing plasterboard is highly reflective on both faces, not just the finished side in your lounge, but also the side you fix it to.

That means if you create a hollow void behind it, or fix it in the wrong way, it does not just underperform, it can redirect the noise. Instead of stopping the sound, it channels it into other parts of your home, such as:

  • The hollow ceiling void
  • The suspended floor void
  • A perpendicular stud wall
  • The structure of the building itself

So a poorly fitted board can quietly move your neighbour noise somewhere else and leave the house feeling worse than before. How it is applied matters just as much as the board you choose.

Where It Belongs in a Proper System

None of this means soundproofing plasterboard is a bad product, it just is not a standalone solution. It belongs as one correctly applied component of a complete approach: mass paired with a decoupling layer, fixed so it never bridges the sound into another surface.

In a proper wall system that also treats the main causes and the flanking paths, it is a valuable final layer. That is the thinking behind our four step method, where every layer has a job and every layer is installed so it does not compromise the rest.

The Honest Answer

So, is soundproofing plasterboard any good? As part of a properly designed and correctly installed system, yes, it does an important job. As a quick standalone fix stuck over an existing wall to silence noisy neighbours, no, and fitted badly it can even backfire.

If you are serious about a quieter home, the board is never the whole answer, the design and the fitting are. You can read more about how we work and why the details matter so much.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is soundproofing plasterboard any good?

It is a useful product, but only as part of a complete system. It adds valuable mass as a final layer, but on its own it gives only a slight reduction and is not a standalone fix for noisy neighbours.

Does soundproofing plasterboard work on its own?

Not really. Mass alone lets a lot of sound through, so it needs to be paired with a resilient or decoupling layer to make a meaningful difference.

Can soundproofing plasterboard make noise worse?

Yes, if it is fitted badly. Because it is reflective on both faces, a hollow void or poor fixing can channel noise into your ceiling, floor, other walls or the structure, making things worse.

Where should soundproofing plasterboard go in a wall?

It is normally the final layer, fixed over a resilient or decoupling layer and finished with plaster, so it adds mass without bridging sound into the surrounding structure.
